Frequently asked questions

What is the Flesch reading ease score?
It is a number from 0 to 100 where higher means easier to read. Scores above 60 are fairly easy and suit a general audience, while scores below 30 read as difficult and academic. It is based on average sentence length and average syllables per word.
What is the Flesch-Kincaid grade level?
It translates the same sentence and word measures into a United States school grade, so a score of 8 means an average eighth-grader should follow the text. It is a quick way to target a reading age for your audience.
How can I lower the reading level?
Use shorter sentences and simpler words, since both measures reward shorter sentences and fewer syllables. Breaking one long sentence into two, and choosing a plain word over a long one, moves the score toward easier reading.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. Everything runs inside your browser, so the work you do here stays on your own device and nothing is uploaded. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many times you use it, and once the page has loaded it keeps working with no connection.
